Arrived in the Republic of South Vietnam, via a C130 Hercules aircraft, with Shaffer, six other scout dog teams, a jeep, and a 2 1/2 ton truck, landing at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, in the middle of a ground attack, during Tet 1968. The 58th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog) actually arrived in increments of one squad per week, while it's official entry in South Vietnam as a complete unit is listed as February 20, 1968.

Actually worked off_leash by PFC Shaffer because of his tendency to walk through trip wires.

Separated from his handler, when PFC Shaffer was wounded in the legs while on operations near Cu Chi, in July or August 1968. Rebel was not wounded as he was working off-leash and was not near Shaffer at the time.

Assigned, at Phuoc Vinh, to replacement scout dog handler, PFC Robert A. Kollar, of Dubuque, Iowa, on Friday, September 13, 1968.

Transferred, with the 58th IPSD, from Phuoc Vinh to Camp Rodriges in I Corps on November 1, 1968. Camp Rodriges was a sub-section of Camp Eagle, base camp for Headquarters and 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile).

Transferred, with the 58th IPSD, from Camp Rodriges to Camp Evans in I Corps on November 1, 1968. Camp Evans was the new base camp for the 3rd Brigade.

Assigned to Sp/4 Leroy Boyce, of the Virgin Islands, in May 1969 when Sgt. Robert A. Kollar was Taken off active handler duty.
