Sergeant #998A, a full blooded, registered German Shepard, was born August,
1967. A three month old puppy, Sergeant was bought by Ray Thompson, then
barely a teen ager, for the sum of $150.00. Due to family problems, Ray
was forced to part with his dear friend and chose to give Sergeant to the
military sometime later.
I first met Sergeant on April 13, 1970 at the 26th Infantry Scout Dog
Platoon training facility at Fort Benning, Georgia. I thought then that
Sergeant was the most beautiful dog in the kennels. From April, 1970 untill
August , 1970 Sergeant and I trained as an on/off leash team. Our training
consistedof detecting enemy ambushes, snipers, and trip wires with explosives
attached.
October 1, 1970 Sergeant and I left Fort Benning, georgia for Vietnam. We
were assigned to the 58th IPSD of the 101st Airborne Division. The area of
operation for the 58th IPSD was the northern sector of Vietnam, to include
the border with Loas. While we worked with infantry units on patrols,
ambushes, and etc. , in the jungles of Vietnam, not one infantryman was
killed or lost by to the enemy's hostility. With tears in my eyes I said
good bye to Sergeant and departed Vietnam April 14, 1971, one year after
our meeting.
Sergeant was one of the lucky few war dogs to return from Vietnam and he did
so in May, 1971. The next year he was retrained as a patrol dog and he trained
new handlers at Lackland AFB, Texas. He then transfered to Carswell AFB,
Texas where he worked untill he was put down from hip displasia in June, 1978.
Thank you Sergeant #998A for being my protector and friend. I and others
are in your debt for saving our lives in the jungles of Vietnam. Thank you
Ray for giving up your friend and companion to the military for this purpose.
